The Unread Shelf Project 2018

The Unread Shelf Project 2018

I’ve just found out about this, so I am taking part in The Unread Shelf Project 2018. Hosted by theunreadshelfkatereadsbooks_, and calsreads on Instagram, the Unread Shelf Project is really just group inspiration to read the books you already own. I have a lot of Unread books. I don’t need, or want, that many unread books. I’d like to have a smaller selection of unread books. Fifty seems like a good number to me. I think that will be just enough to offer a bit of variety, while still leaving room for borrowing or buying new books. So my goal is to read through my unread books.

My goal is to knock out some books that I bought, and requested arcs of and never got to. I’m usually terrible at keeping up with goals like this, because the second I feel like I “have” to do something… I no longer want to. I’ve tried to be realistic about what I will and want to read, and have definitely been better about DNFing books and getting rid of them if I’m not enjoying them. But my compulsion to spend a lot of time at the bookstore and buying books online led to a ton of unread books on my shelf.

There are occasional challenges (monthly and weekly, I believe) which, so far, seem to be designed to both help you see what’s in your unread pile and to motivate you to read those books. I probably won’t do all of the challenges, but I might use the challenges as a means of motivating me, especially when I get tempted by all the pretty new-to-me books I could be buying.

So, I have counted all my Unread Books and discovered I have 226 unread books. I’ve decide to be quite ruthless with quitting books. I’m genuinely interested in all of the books I have left, but I don’t want to waste my time on books I’m not enjoying. So, I’m going to give each book a couple chapters or at least 50-100 pages depending on the size of the book, but if I’m not enjoying the book, I’m not going to keep reading it, regardless of how long it’s been waiting to be read.

I’ll be doing regular updates on my Instagram HERE. I haven’t used Instagram in a while, so hopefully this will get me back into it, and hopefully I’ll be able to do regular updates. So if you’re interested in that, be sure to Follow me over there.

So, there you are. These are my plans for the rest of 2018, and if you want to check out the books I own, you can check that out HERE. It’s not a full list though, I haven’t added any of my Recently bought books! I try to get around to that soon. What are your 2018 reading goals? Do you also find large piles of unread books very stressful? Or, are you one of those magical people who can own 1000 unread books without batting an eye?

  1. My Poor TBR says:

Of all of my reading goals, the one that I would be disappointed in not accomplishing would be reading more tomes. Last year I read 131 books, but only 9 at 500 or more pages. I read 6 more books than in 2016 yet managed to read over 13,000 fewer pages. I’d like to read at least 12 tomes this year. I’ve read 3 to date, so I need to step it up a bit 🙂

The only time I get stressed over piles of unread books is if they’re from the library. I don’t mind paying a late fee, but it’s not cool to make someone wait because I got greedy and borrowed too many at a time.

“Or, are you one of those magical people who can own 1000 unread books without batting an eye?”

No, but I’d like to be 😛 Owning a 1000 books that I haven’t read? I’d sign up for that.

    Good luck, Jade!
